Introduction To Graphic Design (Projects)
Introduction To Graphic Design (Projects)
What is graphic design?
Graphic design:
Graphic design definition:
Graphic Design. Hello and welcome to this article of graphic design. From what visual
computerization is, aptitudes to be a visual fashioner, structure hypothesis,
instruction you need, gear you need, to the visual computerization portfolio
and meeting guidance, this arrangement is for anybody at any level.
So in case
you're keen on visual depiction and thinking about turning into a visual
originator, go along with me as I talk about arrangement of visual depiction
themes. So you're interested in graphic
design, perhaps considering becoming a graphic designer and looking to
learn more in this article I'm going to discuss what graphic design is.
Now a lot of people on my blog have asked me
this question mainly youngsters and people who are thinking about pursuing graphic design and want to know what graphic
design is and if it's ideal for them.
Presently I have regularly discovered
this an extremely hard inquiry, as it doesn't generally have a straightforward
answer without some level of clarification. Presently in the event that you
google this it will reveal to you that: 'Visual depiction is the workmanship or
expertise of joining content and pictures in promotions, magazines or books So
very simple and accurate explanation there, though I happen to think there's
more to it than that.
In this article I'm going to attempt to answer this
question and give you my take on it from my experience. so what is graphic design? Very much how about we
start simple.
So with graphic design
we have two things: We have graphic and design. Graphic is visual, which is
related with craftsmanship, creative mind and articulation, including numerous
mediums, for example, drawing painting etching or lettering given clear and
unequivocal detail. So the graphic piece of graphic design is comprised of visual components, the structure
squares of design.
The fundamental visual components that join to make graphic design incorporate the
accompanying: Line, Color, Shape, Texture, Space, Form and Typography Through
the saddle of our aesthetic articulation we pick these visual components and
organize them on a surface in a format to pass on a thought.
Presently the
subsequent part is design, which is to choose the look and capacity of
something before it is made. So design is thinking, critical thinking and
practicality.... hypothesis. In graphic
design there are decides that can be thought of. These guidelines are known
as 'The standards of design'.
These standards all have a connection between one
another and show up in each all around designed bit of work you see. So the
design standards make the design in 'graphic
design'. A decent handle of design hypothesis will mean there is
consistently substance behind your work. The key standards of design are:
Contrast, Hierarchy, Alignment, Balance, Proximity, Repetition, Simplicity and
Function.
At the point when we bring both the visual components and the design
standards together we have graphic
design. Graphic design isn't
drawing, graphic design isn't
painting, graphic design isn't making a banner or a
snappy logo on your PC, these things are the way to the end and are abilities
in their own right.
Graphic design isn't tied in with making things
look entirely, graphic design is the
association and introduction of data, created through an innovative procedure
for a specific capacity.
In graphic
design we should initially get data, a message or a brief and afterward
explore, think, envision and create and make an answer, an idea so as to convey
that data, recount to a story, a message or thought in a visual way.
It's just
once we have a strong thought created through the design procedure we can
utilize our abilities with format, shading, typography and inventive
apparatuses to breath life into that thought Once upon a period that would have
been with simply the guide of a pencil or a paint brush on paper.
Today it's
each one of those things and that's just the beginning. Today we likewise have
cameras, PCs and printers, since the creation of the print press which
empowered generation on a mass scale graphic design has been utilized to convey
and spread messages around the world.
Through the advancement of innovation,
today we are encircled by a bounty of visual correspondence. Today graphic design is executed over a wide
range of media both print and advanced, for example, Advertising, Branding, Web
design, Interface design, Magazine format, Paper building and bundling, TV,
Motion graphics, Info graphics, Signage, Art and Installations and Digital
workmanship.
On the off chance that you are hoping to seek after a profession
in graphic design you will
unavoidably wind up making work across one of those divisions. Over numerous
decades in the past graphic design
has formed culture through pop craftsmanship, political workmanship and
business craftsmanship.
Today graphic
design has a major business side, it's related intensely with trade and
used to sell and promote things, however that is not all it must be. The
intensity of graphic design to
advise, impact and train on a business level can likewise be utilized to teach
and move an age I accept graphic design
is the solidarity of two restricting powers, imaginative articulation and handy
application, design hypothesis.
As a graphic designer these two powers will
consistently be at chances with one another in your psyche. at the point when
you can bridle these two powers together in concordance, at that point you can
make incredible visual correspondence. With the goal that's a prologue to what
graphic design is. For any of you that were uncertain of what graphic design is. I trust that has
assisted with clarifying.
Graphic design examples:
Graphic design examples. I have three awesome graphic design examples for you to take a look at I'm going to
explain exactly why they're so awesome so you can apply the same techniques and
the tips to your very important area of work.
So I suggest you take some notes
or bookmark today's article if you want to really improve your graphic design portfolio because let's
face it it might be the single most important thing to you as a graphic
designer and obtaining new clients will say the three design failures are
connected down beneath .
So the primary portfolio today is by design that dab
works this is a wonderful chart a design portfolio for various reasons yet
right off the bat notice the enormous measure of negative space around the
principle central focuses this is the presentation page as you can flip
throughout the following task recorded yet negative space permits the design
content to breathe and it's an easy way to add professionalism to your display
of work over crowding your designs and portfolio is going to turn off viewers
less isactually more.
So investigating we can see balance in the typefaces with
thick and slim typography which is another approach to add advancement to your
designs now totaling two the following area you can see a similar format has
been utilized as the past one with objects a similar size and area just as
typography being the same too and this is seen throughout this entire section
of the portfolio.
I repetition ties everything together neatly you can also see
a vague faint design in the negative space too which is a quite shrewd touch
currently we should bring a jump into one of the undertakings on this portfolio
now the exceptionally top is a brief background of the project and it's
displayed cleanly and neatly.
But I thought it could be a little more
thought-out to be honest but moving down this designer has added a process of
the design itself which solidifies a designer's skills and talents and it's something
I always do on my own portfolio of work you know showing the procedure of a
design as we look down some more you can again observe a running subject of
redundancy of design which basically makes the whole page look marvelous and
proficient design standards of format negative space contrasts and so on all
apply when designing your arrangement of work currently we should look at one
final undertaking in this portfolio.
Before making a beeline for the second one
so again in this project the color purple has been used on the landing page of
the project but also into the actual project itself these small subtleties
subliminally arrive at watchers and they tell the designers that rundowns in
actuality an expert arrangement of work so onto the second diagram case of
prior today which is made by Alex covin in his landing page.
He's made use of a
very clever gimmick that sets him apart from the rest he has three main skills
in graphic design coding and
typography and he's displayed these three skills in a clever way he has three
different hats for three different mindsets and heads of design a gimmick like
this is something very different and memorable to the viewer moving into the
portfolio itself that's again a great use of negative space much like the previous
folio and also in the bottom left you'll notice a typography is neatly done and
the same style is carried out through an entire page the use of repetition went
and correctly is very compelling for sure additionally.
There parts of the
design of each venture which are black out of sight including an overall quite
a one of a kind incubate now on the off chance that we click onto one of these
projects we're met with a neat display and a brief description of the project
everything is open plan so to speak and it's not crowded it's very clean and
very crisp also notice that there are two key typefaces used one for headings
and one firming body text which is another key sign of a professional design
you know simply exceptionally uniform.
And very much made so in conclusion on
this portfolio the style and the shading is United together with a sort of
striking pastels utilize the courses now for your arrangement of work have a
set topic shading as a primary concern and furthermore a style that speaks to
your work and afterward construct your portfolio around that style and that
subject the third and the last portfolio.
Today is worked by Buffalo currently
directly off the bat notice how the toolbar at the top is pleasantly offset
with three catches either side of the logo that's a very nice touch indeed now
it's again an open-plan style of website which uses negative space if there's
one thing that you should take away from today's article it's that less is more
and design needs room to breathe the designer has chosen to showcase their
projects with knee Texican thumbnails which is very novel and a pleasant touch
when you turn your cursor over a thumbnail there is an alternate shading.
And a
layer which shares a comparable style all through every one scrolling down is another
amazing technique for gaining jobs and instilling confidence in potential
clients and that is to have testimonials from previous clients this really
helps to solidify yourself as a successful designer and it's something I have
used on my portfolio website too now let's head into one of the projects and
just a quick note.
I personally feel it might be too cramped visually but that's
just my personal taste and my opinion it stood in awesome portfolio this design
has utilized mock-ups and I suggest you do this for yours too because it's a
very professional and high-end way to really express your projects and your
skills there are so many free and awesome mock-ups for you to use online with
just a quick Google search let's take one last quick look at this project and
again he's use mock-ups with a new description and layout for the project
itself so I hope you took some notes and I hope you enjoyed it!
Graphic design major and Career:
Graphic design major and career. Let's set up I'm going to go over a little
bit of a background on why decides becomes graphic designer Stephanie asked
what made you want to become a graphic designer and basically ever since I was
small I love doing art like everyone knew.
That I was just very much creative
person I was always drawing things I was always making stuff like putting
little booklets together and like coming up with I don't know I was just very
artistic and I'm going to see that I asked my dad because I really liked art I
was like what can I do that related to art that will allow me to have a steady
income and my dad suggested.
Graphic
design and he told me a little bit about what it is and I just thought it
was perfect so what exactly is exactly design when you're a graphic designer
you are a creative problem solver and your job is finding a creative solution
for someone else's needs an example of graphic
design out in the real world is like packaging movie poster design
restaurant menus graphics on the web stuff like that basically everything that
takes a lot of creative process and thought like everything out in the world
that was made by a graphic designer for an art director so going over the
questions about like showing a graphic
design.
What exactly is it I'm
thinking about doing it Meredith asked how do you do your lettering and
designing I am going to go over that later but the part I'm going to answer in
this section right now is would you recommend being a graphic designer honestly
that is totally up to you you have to be the judge of that if you're creative
and you know art is your passion and you feel like you have an eye for design I
knew all of this ever since I was very small lots of people have different
tastes.
But you have to be true to yourself and know like if you really like it
then you should pursue it going to school we saw a lot of people go into
graphic and then drop out do not take graphic
design if you want to start your own t-shirt companies but we're half of
the people that would they were like I want to start my own t-shirt company
then dropped out it's so much more than just starting your own t-shirt company
you're going to be learning about type you're going to be learning about layout
it's more intense than just learning about the programs on how to use it it's
learning about everything that goes into design.
I personally like doing it
because it's a challenge Victoria Janet said this is amazing because it just
took my first graphic design course
and immediately with like yep this is what I love and basically it kind of
solidifies whether or not you want to do it if you just know you know try
working up classes or looking up graphic
design
Work online that'll also help you get a feel for what exactly it is
so now we are going to be going over misconceptions I saw a lot of comments
online saying like if I want to be a graphic designer should I learn to code as
soon as possible Susie takes graphic
design classes divorce or in college if I don't know how to draw connect
bill apply for a graphic design major.
I remember I was so scared when I first
started going but then you have to think of it this way it's scary because you
don't know what's to come and what it entails but you're going there to learn
like you're not expected to go into a graphic design course knowing everything
because everyone is in the same boat of view no one knows what's going on a few
people may have taken my graphic design
classes in high school.
But that's just like very beginning if anything and it's
not even that much experience like they may know how to work the programs but
there's so much more to it but no one in the fundamental classes has learned
yet and you're going to be taking it very slow if you don't know anything about
graphics of them but you know what's something you want to do because you love
creating then don't even worry about it.
You don't need any experience they will
help you with literally everything it's fine so now we're going to talk about
school work nikkagabrielle ass hi jasmine where'd you go College do you do your
lettering on your iPad or do you own a drawing tablet I'm going to get to that
whole thing afterwards but right now I'm going to talk about school different
art schools teach different things.
I went to the Art Institute and this is
basically what my experience was like you start off with basic classes classes
get more involved in advance as you go along like we took reds in layout
typography package design branding which is like logos and corporate identity
typing advanced illustration which is basically.
Like where I learned
illustrator those are the types of classes that you'll learn also some things
to note about bulwark is the project for KK long type deep repaired to pull a
lot of Auto miners even though people from the outside are like oh you're going
to school for graphic design it's
not even that hard like it is hard any example of math math is very difficult
but at the end of the day.
If you have one final solution there's one answer
that works graphic design is
different there's so many different options for one thing life takes a long
time and it takes a lot of thought if you're really passionate about it. I'm
just going to end this right here because you're probably tired of reading this thank you very much for reading this.
Example of a graphic design portfolio:
Example of a graphic design
portfolio. I'm actually gonna tell you about two
award-winning portfolios that do gain high professional and highly acclaimed
clients and how they do it I'm gonna tell you the techniques and the format
they use to create the stunning portfolios for their graphic design work and so another awesome resource for learning
essential skills as a graphic designer is Skillshare.
Now Skillshare is a
community of creators that holds over 25,000 classes on design business and
other useful topics and regarding graphic
design skill share boasts a wide selection of courses by professionals in
their respective fields you can learn more about skill share and how to get two
months totally for free later in today's article so here we have the first
graph a design portfolio by Melanie and this is something.
I really really have
liked and I've checked it out before of course before making the article but
it's already really stunning and well planned out with all portfolio one of the
first things you need to take into account when making a portfolio is your
color scheme and I've mentioned this before it helps to have a running theme
throughout the entire portfolio it ties things together and Melanie has chosen
a kind of charcoal black with dark black white and red which I think they do
work really well together.
As you can see her navigation panel is there a red
which stands out when it's easily easily you know visible but then scrolling
down her page she's got the About section and you can see here she's even used
her color scheme for the white red and black this is the thinking that you need
to have when you're making your graphic
design portfolio she's also aligned the text to the left.
Which is really
really well done and she's kept everything balanced and consistent this is a
really well thought out about paid for her graph lizanne portfolio and one
crucial thing that not many people actually put into the portfolios is the
actually explain their process for the graph design workflow this creates
confidence in the client because they know exactly what's gonna happen step-by-step.
And what they can expect from the graphic
design projects we're now heading down to her work which again it's really
neatly laid out and his balance you know symmetrically on one side and she's
using her wife and black his color scheme on the left and obviously on the
right is her work now we could actually take a deeper look into our projects
but to save time.
And you know just to keep going on just take know that she has
a client from a red bull that is a huge client and that just shows how well thought-out
this portfolio is how strong this kind of failure can actually work out for
your career and now heading down to the bottom of her portfolio design we've
got social media contacts and also the color scheme continues throughout of
course because it should do but finally one thing.
I really really love about
what Melanie's done here is that she's added some humor she said at her logo
her own original illustration in a kind of humorous way you know the high five
in the broken hand and this is really really really awesome and it leaves the
person who's viewing the portfolio with a sense of happiness the sense of you
know just that was some light-hearted humor this is a really clever already
thought-out portfolio design so you should be taking some notes guys but anyway
let's move on to the second portfolio in today's article so here we have a graphic design portfolio by Jack
Porsche.
Let's say a web developer but it still stands the same you know still a
portfolio for some kind of design work and the first thing that I've noticed on
his landing pages he's used some really well asymmetrical balance where he's
got his typography on the left you've just kind of smaller but his logo is
larger on the right this ties back to the theory.
As you can see on the left he's
got his a toolbar his navigation bar and let's just check out his skills and
see how that pans out so again he's gone for his color scheme here of a kind
turquoise but here is you some contrast using the header as the larger and more
bold typeface for font and then below he's got the more thin text you know this
looks really neat and again there's more balance.
because all that's on the left
and on the right is what his skill sets are so again this is really
well-thought-out and Jack's done a really great job here too I'm heading into
Jack's work he's got a really interesting way of doing things and that is he's
got each of his projects in a square kind of thumbnail.
And I personally I think
it's okay but I do like to have kind of gaps or space between each thumbnail
for both thing is done well his that is he's got some animations and roll over
roll over effects on his thumbnails and of course you need to have a contact
page if you want people to contact you for work on your graphic design portfolio and it's continued with his color theme
his font which again is more consistency you want to keep the same fonts
throughout the entire portfolio.
And the final thing I want to say about the
actual portfolio side of things and gaining clients and what not I've said it
before but that is you need to advertise you need to promote yourself you need
to take into account everything.
I say about portfolios within graphic design because you need to get
a right to get the clients you know you need to promote yourself you need to
make sure the content is great you need to bring theme you need to make sure
everything is tied together so neatly and so well done you can have some really
decent work but if your portfolio sucks it isn't really gonna get you anywhere.
Graphic design vs web design:
Graphic design vs web design. I’m talking about the Renee graphic designer
and a web designer now ten years ago there were vast differences but coming
from a perspective of where we stand today 2018 there's differences but graphic
designers more than ever are now capable of doing web design skills than they
were ten years ago but let's jump into the content.
I highly recommend doing so
but on daily articles helping you pack a punch and build an audience
specifically today talking about the graphic
design industry if you're curious about the gear tech or tips to get going
in the draft design industry you can check those out in the YouTube cards above
or the description below for now let's jump on into the content without web
design vs graphic design
let's
just break it down very simply graphic designer logos brochures business cards
layout design Instagram ads Twitter feed gifts the works so graphic design started out as an
industry based on paper projects the brochures business cards letter heads
logos etc it's starting to fluctuate starting to shift towards digital design.
Let's look at a web designer what is a web designer do a web designer is
somebody who does not deal with a heavy amount of code they have an awareness
of code in the ability to code but they're gonna be using platforms like Wix or
WordPress or Squarespace to create their web designs the reason being is they
are using tools to create websites on a design standpoint they're not going in
and creating custom HTML CSS JavaScript special websites that can do crazy
parallax that flies through or jumps up or turns or spins they're laying out
websites and to be fair there are plugins so the plugins can help you appear to
be a kid with code.
But you're really just using things that other coders have
created to pull together your website break it down a little bit more when it
comes to web design web design is more of a plug-and-play type of situation
whereas if you look at somebody who's doing deep code.
They are literally
writing the website they're building out the structure the main thing about the
technology and where we at today ten years ago graphic designers couldn't have
just jumped over to WordPress and started to feel it out and help you put
together a website but now they can and the benefits of this is the fact that
brand identity can flow so much smoother across platforms so you can have your
logo your letterhead your business card your whole ad campaign flow so much
better.
Because the graphic designer is holding the reins of each one now if
you're a graphic designer and you're thinking well I'm just learning the basics
keep at that keep learning the basics of graphic
design learn about form learn about rhythm learn about how to arrange tight
use space and line and all that to create great graphic design compositions
then take your knowledge of graphic
design.
And pull it into web design you create better websites because of it
if you have any more questions about graphic
design versus web design please comment below I hope I've answered some of
your questions it's kind of murky.
I mean to be totally honest it's kind of
murky because coding and web design and web developer and there's just so many
terms today but I hope I've put you on the right track of understanding the
difference between a graphic designer and a web design.
Is graphic design a good major?
Is graphic design a good major? Besides learning the Adobe Creative Cloud
Photoshop InDesign illustrator learning and graphic design fundamentals are there any exterior or ulterior
benefits to that degree you know is it worth the 30 to 40 thousand dollars that
you're gonna invest in order to become a graphic designer a bachelor's in graphic design .
So really the answer is
yes because it helps you see problems from multiple angles and I say this in
the fact of if you're willing to invest yourself if you're willing to go all-in
in your graphic design education now
if you're just going to college to like party and have a good time and maybe
you know.
Learn a few design skills along the way don't waste your money don't
go you're gonna learn Photoshop and design an illustrator and that'll be all
fun but you're not gonna get the depth and the brevity of the graphic design degree if you don't
focus in on learning those key fundamentals those key principles.
And then
realizing you can apply those to other experiences and other job situations in
your life so if you're a masterful problem solver you're gonna be able to go
into business situations and help them develop strategies and plans you're
gonna be able to go into marketing into advertising you're gonna have this
strong business sense because you understand solving problems now.
If you want
to really dive in and go deeper with that business sense I recommend going in
for a minor in marketing and advertising in business management that way you
complement those graphic design
problem-solving skills with some strong business understanding because there's
a lot of things in business especially in today's world of entrepreneurship
that you need to know that way you don't make mistakes with your vision.
What I
mean by that is so you really awesome problem-solving idea but it doesn't match
some of the fundamentals of business and some of the important concepts then
you're gonna mess up so if you compliment your graphic design degree with a minor in marketing advertising
business management etc.
You're gonna maximize the ability for that degree to
give you great opportunities yes there are ulterior benefits to a graphic design degree in college especially
if you're somebody who needs structure and means timelines needs goals to get
the degree that you're looking to aim for now if you're somebody who's very
self-motivated a lot of the skills can be learned online a lot of them can be
learned through online courses through YouTube.
And things along those
lines if you're really looking to get a deep immersion a graphic design degree is fantastic I have my bachelor's and my
master's degree in graphic design
and they have been extremely beneficial to me through the years in my graphic
design career so that's just a little bit of perspective on the benefits of a graphic design degree just outside of
the core you know learning Photoshop Illustrator and InDesign.
if you have any
questions or you want to invest in this article comment below and give your
insights tell me a little bit about what you think about a graphic design degree if there's benefits to it etc.
I want to hear
people from the field talking back on their experiences and just giving us all
some insight and some help especially for those who want to become graphic
designers and are interested in a degree in graphic design
Is graphic design hard?
Is graphic design hard? let's see what comes out my brain um there's
something that's been on my mind lately and I don't really know if this has
like a message a big message to it but I'm just gonna ramble and tell you what
it is right so it has to do with graphic
design specifically.
but I guess you can extend it to other things so the
other day I was having a class at my university at design class and then my
teacher was just like he was going on and rambling about the state of design in
the country at the moment he was saying was sort of like originality is not a
thing anymore and all of us upcoming designers have been inspired by things.
That I've been done and those designers that have inspired those have also been
inspired by other designers and it's like a chain so originality is kind of a a
myth it doesn't really exist and then he went on to talk about how we're gonna
get off of university next year or at the end of this year and then start
working for someone we're not going to get paid well enough and we're gonna be
expected to hand things in that were meant to be handed in like last week that sort
of thing.
I guess like that might make sense from his perspective and that might
also be true in a way is also is kind of like a pessimistic view of things and
I guess not the kind of thing that you want your students to interiorize but
the thing is I feel like a lot of people in the field of design I guess have
the mentality and have that mentality that I don't know that they can't like
make good money or that they can't like live well from their craft from the
things they make.
And that's not okay that's totally just up to us I get this
question a lot on my my different articles or whatever and it's from people
think I don't draw very well can I be a graphic designer or I have no
experience with Photoshop or illustrator or any of that software can I be a graphic
designer you have these questions they're totally valid it's totally okay but
don't let them don't let the little things stop you from reaching your goal
like I had drawing lessons when I was in high school.
And I kind of enjoyed
them I had a good time drawing because it was that moment when I could like put
my earphones in listen to some music and just draw actually when I got to
university and I had to take a drawing class which a side note not every graphic design University is going to
require like drawing classes or they're not going to be part of the program.
But
my particular University here in Portugal did so I had to take drawing lessons
and I hated them I really really really hated them luckily it was only one year
even though I liked drawing before I went to university.
I went out of that you
really really disliking drawing there is always going to be a part little parts
of this thing that you like that you're not gonna like so much just think that
soon it will be over pat yourself on the back for having done it and it will
all be behind your back and you won't have to worry about it anymore.
It'll be
just tiny fractions of the span of time that you'll be doing design or whatever
it is but my point with this is just to say that just like drawing there will
be many other things to graphic design
that you might not like so much or that you might not be familiar with you
might not be a master of Illustrator or Photoshop or whatever program you'll
need to use before you start your course.
I wasn't I never used Illustrator or
Photoshop or InDesign or any of that before I started my degree you just have
to like pull yourself up is that a saying and get started somewhere don't let
other people's level of knowledge on a certain thing stop you from wanting to
get there too or wanting to go higher than that every people ever.
oh how do i
english because every person has their starting point and yours might not have
happened yet but it will and it's just a matter of time if you're a graphic
designer in particular or I guess if you're someone that likes design and would
like to give it a go and go to university and study it.
Then I'm going to
suggest something to you because it's something that has helped change my
mentality of what design is so a guy called Aaron James traveling he's a
designer he's from the US it's a guy that I really admired and said I just want
to like his bump and be like you're the man he doesn't turn graphic design into this thing that is
like you must use these rules you must pair the colors like this you must use
all these theories and like there needs to be all this science behind every
move that you make but instead.
he's just like sit in front of your laptops and
start playing with things and coffee fix and drag this let things happen and
just embrace it and whatever it comes out of this will be cool and you can work
from there I just truly preferred his methodology.
And I like that kind of
opportunity of not passing by specific principles that I think about when you
go to college or when you start learning about something that you feel are kind
of imposed on what you do so yeah check out Aaron rattling um yeah let's just
run this off before I chose my degree there wasn't much that.
I actually knew
about it I knew where I was I knew kind of what I wanted but I didn't know how
to get there I didn't know how to work with all these programs but you just
have to take the first step that you think will get you there and then
eventually you will get there and sometimes what other people say on the way
who put you down will be not the biggest boost.
And can kind of get you a little
bit what's the opposite of motivated I'm motivated oh gosh not everybody's
experience is going to be the same so you have your own thing treasure that and
do your thing see you and be cool and rock on yeah that's my message for today.
Graphic designer cv:
Graphic designer cv. So, as a Graphic Designer, when you apply
for a job, you will showcase a portfolio of your work. This will display all
your creative skills and work you have done to date. As I have said in previous
episodes of the series, a good portfolio is arguably the most important thing
you will need to get a job.
It is what you are judged on. However, there is
something else potential clients or employers will judge you on and that is
your experience. Now Graphic Design
can be particularly competitive. When many applicants are applying for a
position, experience can often be the deciding factor.
So as well as showcasing
your work, you will need to showcase your experience. This comes in the form of
a CV that will go along with your portfolio. Now I often get asked a lot of
questions about the Graphic Design CV.
Questions like, what makes for a good design CV? What kind of CV is ideal,
print or computerized? What should I include? How many pages should it be?
How
much type should I include? What are employers looking for? And what's the best
program to use to build my CV? So in this article, I'm going to discuss the Graphic Design CV and answer these
questions.
In this article, I'll also be sharing my experience and offer some
tips for you to keep in mind. So, the Graphic
Design CV should go hand-in-hand with the portfolio. The CV should clearly
state your skills and relevant experience. Often when I apply for a job, I will
send two documents: the portfolio and the CV.
So let's look at some of those
questions. So the first question is, what makes for a good design CV? There are
lots of factors that make for a good CV, all of which you should try and
implement in yours. So first is originality.
Employers will see hundreds of
CVs. This is where you have a chance to stand out and create something a little
different. Here you can consider orientation, color, typography, and
composition. If you have a personal brand, you can apply it here. Well
structured, now you have to imagine that the employer is browsing through lots
of CVs at a fast pace, and chances are the employer will be looking for
something specific.
In my experience, presenting a clear hierarchy is key, so
throughout your CV, aim to create a clear hierarchy of information. They might
only glance at your cover page for a few seconds, so one of the first things
you want them to see are your key skills. So, on your front cover, you should
consider including a list of your key design strengths to software expertise.
This will catch the attention straightaway. If you meet the criteria, chances
are they will put your CV into the short list. Now typically you will have to
include details about your experience and if you have a lot this can mean
creating a CV with a few more pages than you may want.
If you choose to add
more info, than leave that towards the back. If someone does not want to read
it, that's fine as long as the key facts are presented clearly first. Keep the
layout simple and clear. Now employers will be put off if the layout of a CV is
too complex, too busy, or hard to navigate. This will demonstrate poor design
skills, reflect badly on you, and discourage the reader.
If you have a personal
brand, keep it subtle. The purpose of your CV is to be read and digested
quickly. The reader should be able to digest key facts in less than a minute.
Don't distract from that. So it will help to keep your layout nice and simple.
Show you have thought about it and taken care to compose it.
This will make a
good impression. Good typography, now remember an employer will be scrutinizing
everything they see from you, your portfolio, and your CV. Your CV is a
representation of you. Take maximum care and make sure your typography is
flawless. If your CV is nicely balanced, easy to read, it will make a good
impression. Errors and sloppiness will reflect badly on you.
What kind of CV is
ideal, print or computerized? Well today, it is very common to send a CV over
email or upload it to a portfolio design website as a PDF document. A lot of
employers will be looking at these on screen and then more than likely will
print them out. Now my advice here is to create a digital DPF that can be both
viewed on screen and printed. This means only having to create one document, so
you could consider creating a landscape CV as this will look nice on screen.
In
your PDF, you could also include hyperlinks to your portfolio website or social
media pages. Remember, your digital CV will also have to work in print, so try
and create a clear design with contrast between the type and any background
color you may use. If you are smart here, you can kill two birds with one
stone.
What exactly should I include? So in your CV, you should include in
order, your key skills, this is one of the first things you want someone to
see. This could be a list of your design strengths to software experience. A
personal profile, so this should be a short paragraph about yourself between 50
and 100 words.
This is where you get to say a few words about you as a person
and as a designer. Here you can talk about your particular passions, interests,
and what you specialize in. This should be one of the first things they see, so
aim to have this towards the front. Education and qualifications, this should
be a breakdown of your relevant education.
You don't have to go that far back
here. A list of your relevant education regarding art to design will be best
here. Work experience, so depending on how much experience you have, this will
be a list of the places you have worked.
