What Photography
is?
Photography:
Photography is a
portrait an interview series where we talked to as many different people as we
could across the photography
community. And I sent this question of What Photography is? It's really a portrait project is what it is.
But
to gather the best and brightest minds in the photo business at least the ones
that were available to come. Kind of create a little community you know with at
the center obviously.
But at least the organizing factor and ask them this
question, get their responses organized that together and then with that we
have a general sense of what photography
is at this time and place.
I think a lot of artist working with photography think about this question.
I think it's true also of curators and anybody that's working in the field. Has
asked themselves what photography is?
At some point the
wonder what we're doing. You know? So, it's one of these mediums that's kind of
constantly evolving. Part of this project too was figuring out where it is
today and how that relates to the history of photography.
We had the idea of a portrait series for us. We wanted
to create some kind of visual content. We do a lot of things about photography. So, we wanted to do
something that is photography.
We
thought well, who would we make portraits of? Who would people want to see
portraits of? As our viewers on Explora for. And we thought of course people in
the photography community.
The
question is important to me personally but also in a broader perspective.
Really the project is less about what I think photography is, and more about finding out with other people think
it is.
Seeing the breath of photographic practice. When people are with you and
they see what's going on, they open up a little bit.
And when that happened,
usually the end of a portrait session we would say: Hey, anyone else you would
recommend for this project? And almost everybody offered 3 or 4 names and we’d
reached out to them and if they were available and we felt the work fit and we
respected and liked their work, we asked them to be involved.
If they agreed,
they were in. It was important for me as the photographer to come up with some
sort of uniformity in the aesthetic with what we're doing. And because we're
shooting over the course of several months of course, 1, the lighting is
changing, the people are changing.
We wanted to make sure that each portrait
sort of reflected the person that we were shooting. So, they're going to be
different portraits. We had told hold something constant in this project.
And
what we ended up doing in order to keep some semblance of uniformity, is we
shot every image in the same location. We used the Penumbra Foundations
Highlight Studios. Which is a natural light studio in Midtown (Manhattan).
North-facing light-beautiful light. Gorgeous space to shoot in. We got a
backdrop from Oliphant Studios. So, hand-painted backdrop that we shot, and we
made sure to include that in every single shot.
And we also decided to go with
the monochrome palette. So, we took away the color to sort of simplify things
and also to keep the images sort of aesthetically unified. There's the
practical sense that we wanted a definition of photography.
And of course, there is no one definition. And people
are reluctant to offer something like that, I think. Because first of all, who
knows?
I mean there's so many different definitions. You don’t want to get nail
down to anyone. We were a little bit worried going in that we might end up
getting the same answer over and over again. That was our fear going into this
project.
Photography rule of thirds:
Photography
rule of thirds. All right so photography
rule of thirds probably the most golden out of all the golden rules in photography and cinematography but
before photography and
cinematography were even created painters way way back of the day in the
Renaissance time.
When there was new kind of paintings and styles coming out
painters of that time wanted to create artwork that showcased more of the
background so there was a conversation happening so that the subject.
When they
used to paint the subject would be centered the most important part of the
image would be in the center kind of like you know when you're playing darts
right you're aiming for that center point whatever the bullseye at the center
of the frame.
And they found that they could showcase more of the background and
create more of this conversation by taking the character or subject out of the
center and moving it along one of these intersecting lines in the frame.
There
are nine equal blocks that you can divide each frame up into with four
intersecting points placing your subject on one of these four intersecting
point creates this much more dynamic communication or conversation really that
can happen with the person viewing the artwork or photo or video or painting.
And
then the subject is in that painting because when you have the subject in the
center of the frame as you can see there's equal distance in all directions so
this tends to make the viewers eye very static not moving no interaction when
you take this point of interest here and you move it off to one of these
intersecting lines.
What happens is it creates more of a dynamic images it
allows the eye to come into the frame look at the viewer look at the background
and have a communication have a conversation there make this energetic
connection.
Between viewer and art or photo or video all these things so this is
one of those original rules or really like concepts not really rule it's a
concept or a theory behind framing that allows from much more dynamic images to
be created so you can see with our lovely bottle Karissa.
That when she's framed
on one of these intersecting lines on the Third's there's a much more dynamic
communication going on here the eye comes into the frame analyzes it sees the
background goes back into the subject.
When was photography invented?
Photography was concocted in 1826 or 1827 By Joseph Nicéphore Niépce
History of Photography:
History of
Photography. This is a brief glance at how photography has created photography
is depended on the revelation that on the off chance that you jab an opening in
the mass of a darkroom.
You make camera obscura light going through the gap is
anticipated topsy turvy and holds shading and viewpoint the primary authentic
notices of camera obscura in pinhole photography
are by old thinkers drab Aristotle and Al Hassan in 1490.
Leonardo da Vinci
records nitty gritty portrayals of camera obscura and utilizes it to follow
stuff by the 1700s camera obscura gadgets are normal and there's proof to
recommend specialists like Rembrandt Vermeer and Caravaggio use them gee
drawing in 1724.
Johann heinrich shelton finds that substances blend in with
silver nitrate respond to light sadly the images fade soon after until one day
in 1826 the world's first photograph is taken by josef nietzsche for Niepce and
france using a procedure called heliography voila this exposure takes several
days.
And you can see the sunlights of both sides of the building after his
death meet Jay's partner Louie de Guerre continues his working makes the main
down to earth photographic procedure in 1833 the daguerreotype in 1839.
The
French government purchases and announces the daguerreotype allowed to the
world this is when cool stuff begins happening like the principal photograph of
a human in spite of the fact that this presentation endured around seven
minutes a man was getting his shoes cleaned and was standing flawlessly still
along these lines leaving a mark on the world.
This was additionally the primary
photograph with Sol and obviously the world's first selfie is taken by a person
named Robert Cornelius and people going to human it wouldn't take long for
naked photography to commence too in
1840.
Henry Fox Talbot discloses the calotype a procedure dependent on negatives
that takes into account paper duplicates to be made anyway Talbot attempt to
charge permit expenses for the calotype so it didn't generally get on
contrasted with the Gare whose name is currently one of 72 names engraved on
the Eiffel Tower Talbot spent his life fighting lawsuits and eventually gave up
on photography.
You could say Talbot
became a big negative in the end it's also important to mention the commitment
of Sir John Herschel who distributed numerous fundamental research papers in
begat the term photography from the
Greek expressions of light in drawing by the 1850s.
Portable photograph studios
were extremely popular in light of the fact that photographs must be created
nearby introduction times were around three minutes in length so individuals
use neck supports and medications to keep still it's additionally why no one
grinned in early photographs.
What could be the world's first Photoshop happens
in 1861 the head of Abraham Lincoln is set on an increasingly honorable body
the world's first shading photo is likewise delivered it's of a bow in 1871.
Richard Leach Maddox who had a remarkable mustache imagines the gelatin dry
plate this implies littler cameras and no tripods important extraordinary fruitful
chap currently here's a cool story.
Brother so as to settle the discussion of
whether each of the four of a pony's hooves ever at the same time leave the
ground Englishman Edward my extension sets up twelve cameras with wire triggers.
In the way of a dashing pony the world's first photograph arrangement
demonstrates that they do in 1885 George Eastman founder of Eastman Kodak
invents roll film the first handheld camera the Kodak goes on sale in 1888.
Why
Kodak because Eastman just like the letter K the Kodak came preloaded with a
hundred exposures that needed to be sent back to the factory for processing and
reloading when the roll was finished.
Long exposure photography:
long
exposure photography essentially refers to leaving the shutter speed the
shutter speed leaving the shutter open for an extended period of time so it
allows more light into the sensor.
And there's more motion blur so it can create
some really cool effects if you're still a little bit unsure about what I'm
actually talking about then here's some examples I think even doing it on the
escalator could be really cool.
Because you have it's still right here then
everything that's still around it which will be the steps will be in focus and still
but everything else will be blurred.
I'll just keep it short and sweet the slower
the shutter speed the more light is gonna be let in and the more motion blur
the faster the shutter speed the less lights will be allowed in and the less
movement obscure everything being equal in case you're accomplishing something
like evening time photography.
The
entirety of the time picture takers will have a moderate shade speed so they're
able to bring in more of the light without sacrificing the quality by upping
the ISO your only problem with having a slow shutter speed.
It's not really a
problem but well yeah it is a problem if you try doing it handheld there's
gonna be camera shake because you think about it the slower the shutter speed
the more the movement obscure.
There is so as long as that shade is open it's
catching each and every piece of light that is coming into the edge and if that
bit of light changes which it will if you are moving around so it's gonna look
all blurry and old motion blurry or let's be realistic it's not like you're
going to have perfectly still hands.
When you're taking your photos so what you
need he's a tripod next thing is to just find a location a lot of the time people
take long exposure pros of cars going by so the lights on the front and the
lights on the rear that's why in the law of those photos you'll see a beam of
red lights and a beam of yellow lights because the yellow lights are the front
lights and the red lights that realize.
I want to find a place where it's really
even and there's yellow lights on one side and red lights of one this is good
right here because got the cars on this side and then the tram on this side so
we'll just wait for the cars to go by and then a trams go by it's all about
timing.
That's the thing probably gonna have to take a fair few photos before I
get a good one because I currently have it set at the shutter is set to 3
entire seconds so not 1/3 entire seconds and an opening of f9.
So it's quite
shut off or a transient brisk another cool thing about long presentation photography is water has swells but
since of the movement obscure in light of the fact that it's still it really
smooths out those waves.
And makes it resemble it's totally splendidly level so
we'll do that right here on the arrow so many more things that could have
touched on with long exposure
photography.
Leading lines photography:
Leading lines
photography. I just have some pictures on the ground and start
so the first piece for leading lines is Victor background so if I look at this
photo by unrepairable found one more famous apparently.
The story is walking on
the valley to keep the man man turned on and credited with one gets a shot but
I love about the shot did of course it's wrong we had when two men face also
ranking female it is in the original image.
There's a slight little white barrel
run Memphis and I think that would she'd by dodging the photos it gets back
from Davis film obviously and wonder way to integrate the feature photography is when we're walking down
alleyways walk about from crease open certain.
Boulevard retreats look for the
leading lines and try to get subjects head looking straight at me and also it's
very critical for me to previously to crouch down tsimko just to make sure
those the high position is dead center in the meadows middle of this valley.
One
tip to shoot vertical so odd into the photo that I shot by recently and Vietnam
and when I made this image I saw just we design on the bottom to bring one
straight up command and for me the cherry on top it it's more detail like is
fika commands like this one so the way.
I like to shoot these kind of photos is
if I switch from via magnetic lock why not vertical tune to work better another
practical tip shooting leading lines and start is wait there is really called
efficient technique where we look for in the cheesy background.
And just wait
for the right subject or fish tend to the brain so this is a photo that I shot
in Korea 2009 I believe and the way I shot this image is I saw this nice
leaving lines in the background waited for somebody to enter the frame.
And I
just got lucky that displayed in umbrella and all white came in the second
automatic photo she saw me slightly lowered umbrella to cover her eyes and I
think that's why I actually made the shot so you can see all the bleeding lines
which are pointing to that direction or vice versa the lines of the point or
chase delicate flip or arrows so one day I'll shoot him street photography.
After work this is about
2011 Santa Monica in Los Angeles and I do distinction sculpture nearby in my
workplace she the leading one in the bottom of the frame and it's waiting for
somebody to enter the frame not sure how long awaited.
Lady's tenure to me and I
just got lucky that demanding the bicycle came and time to perfectly and I
might have taken two or three four days and it settles it tip number five drops
down is the footage. So this is the some information about leading lines photography. Expectation you delighted in it.
Self portrait photograph:
Self
portrait for me personally there are so many times when I'm in the mood
to shoot or create but there's no one around to do it with so today I'm going
to go over some of my favorite tips and techniques.
That I use when taking my
own self portraits so let's get into
it starting off some things you'll need to capture the perfect self portrait some kind of camera like
a point-and-shoot DSLR or even an iPhone it could totally work quite.
Literally
anything that has a self timer on it but today I'll be using my Nikon at z7 and
most likely switching my lenses throughout shooting next thing you'll need is a
tripod or some kind of stand where your camera is absolutely safe from any
Falls.
I'm not telling you to avoid the stacked pillow technique but I also am
don't do that but we've all been there moving on we want to pick a solid
location and also start visualizing a concept in our heads if we want this
self-portrait to be a next level we want to prepare by treating this like we're
shooting an actual model or a friend.
For me I'm gonna utilize parts of my room
for this shoot because we have some nice natural light coming in through these
windows I'd also rather not be outside where people can see me taking pictures
of myself.
But that's just me and because we will be in the photo ourselves so
we want to also think about what we're going to wear sounds pretty simple but
having a nice outfit and frame can do a lot to complement your final image.
So
just think about the colors and the patterns involved in where you're gonna
wear and just make sure it doesn't take away too much or distract from your
final photo so now that we have the gear we're using a location and an outfit in
mind let's get into more of the technical stuff for the first image.
That I have
in mind to capture it actually doesn't call for a tripod so for those of you
who are about to stack your camera on some pillows you're in luck for this
specific shot we'll be shooting a mirror selfie but a dope mirror selfie so
this semi full-length mirror.
That I just recently purchased is enough for
latching to the top of a door but today we're gonna hook it up to the top of my
blinds probably not the safest thing to do but the natural light coming in
through my windows it was just too perfect next you're going to want to think
about your background and foreground objects.
That are appearing in your photo
from mine I'll be bringing in this light-up headboard into frame also be hanging
up some additional string lights to add some more interest and warm into my
overall shop I suggest taking advantage of things you have around your space
and just kind of thinking outside the box of what will look good now.
I'll be
attaching my 35 millimeter F 1 point 4 onto my z7 with this glass being perfect
for portraits it'll give us a perfect end result with the low aperture kind of
blurring out visual points that we're shooting directly through a mirror and
this just adds some overall mystery to our final photo.
And because we don't
need a self-timer for this shot we'll just be making sure our manual settings
are in good shape.
I believe my shutter was somewhere around 1 in 250th or 200
just because we weren't moving it too much maintaining our ISO wasn't even a
problem.
Because of how much additional light we added into the frame and here's
the final photo for the next self-portrait.
I have in mind I'll be accessing the
self timer function within my camera so it'll be super helpful if you have that
within yours as well and because I'm visioning this image to be a bit more colorful
than our previous shot.
Why photography is important?
Doesn't matter what a we love in the end what matters is the
fact that we want to capture it be it in a memory or in any other medium
snapshots everybody likes them and everybody takes them.
And took them nowadays
it's easy for everyone to do so do we love them yes are we happy with them of
course we are but are they photography nowhere
near there are not easy photography.
if we describe the tiger free as a craft and just like hitting the sensor on a
light hitting the firm's surface and this is where a responsibility of the
photographer kicks in capturing a person like the person is means a lot.
More
than just his shutter button it means also a lot more than knowing your camera
settings you see people will cease whether we like it or not this is what
people do I remember on my cousin she died at the age of nine after an accident
on Linea Negra not only image.
I could find was that one when she had her first
day at school when she was six years old or my other cousin died at the age of
19 in a car accident and I just have one image and the rest is just covered in
my memories.
I stumble upon this image versus a photograph or two for my mother
sitting in it Michelle technically they were very good did they really show how
my mom was noble already showed is a woman on a chair looking into the camera
waiting for instructions from the photographer.
This is it result is that I
don't have a decent picture of my mother a lot of people don't have decent
images of the loved ones and this is what I talking about when I say it's a
responsibility of the photographer.
The important thing to know is that if you
want to capture that rehearsal just like that person is you just need more than
New York or your settings all of that you to connect and you need to know how
loud connect and you might need to have that mental bond and you need to bond
with your subject.
And then you get this split second and this can be the music
the whole environment the most important thing what you need to know is that
your subject needs to be comfortable with your surrounding with the whole
ambience.
And then then you can take that image of your subjects that shows the
person who's seeing right in front of you and this work it doesn't matter who
or what you love the most important thing is that we want to capture it like it
is.
