I went to the Art Institute and this is basically what my experience was like you start off with basic classes classes get more involved in advance as you go along like we took reds in layout typography package design branding which is like logos and corporate identity typing advanced illustration which is basically.

Like where I learned illustrator those are the types of classes that you'll learn also some things to note about bulwark is the project for KK long type deep repaired to pull a lot of Auto miners even though people from the outside are like oh you're going to school for graphic design it's not even that hard like it is hard any example of math math is very difficult but at the end of the day.

I really really have liked and I've checked it out before of course before making the article but it's already really stunning and well planned out with all portfolio one of the first things you need to take into account when making a portfolio is your color scheme and I've mentioned this before it helps to have a running theme throughout the entire portfolio it ties things together and Melanie has chosen a kind of charcoal black with dark black white and red which I think they do work really well together.

As you can see her navigation panel is there a red which stands out when it's easily easily you know visible but then scrolling down her page she's got the About section and you can see here she's even used her color scheme for the white red and black this is the thinking that you need to have when you're making your graphic design portfolio she's also aligned the text to the left.

Which is really really well done and she's kept everything balanced and consistent this is a really well thought out about paid for her graph lizanne portfolio and one crucial thing that not many people actually put into the portfolios is the actually explain their process for the graph design workflow this creates confidence in the client because they know exactly what's gonna happen step-by-step.

And what they can expect from the graphic design projects we're now heading down to her work which again it's really neatly laid out and his balance you know symmetrically on one side and she's using her wife and black his color scheme on the left and obviously on the right is her work now we could actually take a deeper look into our projects but to save time.

Let's say a web developer but it still stands the same you know still a portfolio for some kind of design work and the first thing that I've noticed on his landing pages he's used some really well asymmetrical balance where he's got his typography on the left you've just kind of smaller but his logo is larger on the right this ties back to the theory. 

As you can see on the left he's got his a toolbar his navigation bar and let's just check out his skills and see how that pans out so again he's gone for his color scheme here of a kind turquoise but here is you some contrast using the header as the larger and more bold typeface for font and then below he's got the more thin text you know this looks really neat and again there's more balance.

because all that's on the left and on the right is what his skill sets are so again this is really well-thought-out and Jack's done a really great job here too I'm heading into Jack's work he's got a really interesting way of doing things and that is he's got each of his projects in a square kind of thumbnail.

And I personally I think it's okay but I do like to have kind of gaps or space between each thumbnail for both thing is done well his that is he's got some animations and roll over roll over effects on his thumbnails and of course you need to have a contact page if you want people to contact you for work on your graphic design portfolio and it's continued with his color theme his font which again is more consistency you want to keep the same fonts throughout the entire portfolio.

And the final thing I want to say about the actual portfolio side of things and gaining clients and what not I've said it before but that is you need to advertise you need to promote yourself you need to take into account everything.

I say about portfolios within graphic design because you need to get a right to get the clients you know you need to promote yourself you need to make sure the content is great you need to bring theme you need to make sure everything is tied together so neatly and so well done you can have some really decent work but if your portfolio sucks it isn't really gonna get you anywhere.

let's just break it down very simply graphic designer logos brochures business cards layout design Instagram ads Twitter feed gifts the works so graphic design started out as an industry based on paper projects the brochures business cards letter heads logos etc it's starting to fluctuate starting to shift towards digital design. 

Let's look at a web designer what is a web designer do a web designer is somebody who does not deal with a heavy amount of code they have an awareness of code in the ability to code but they're gonna be using platforms like Wix or WordPress or Squarespace to create their web designs the reason being is they are using tools to create websites on a design standpoint they're not going in and creating custom HTML CSS JavaScript special websites that can do crazy parallax that flies through or jumps up or turns or spins they're laying out websites and to be fair there are plugins so the plugins can help you appear to be a kid with code.

But you're really just using things that other coders have created to pull together your website break it down a little bit more when it comes to web design web design is more of a plug-and-play type of situation whereas if you look at somebody who's doing deep code.

They are literally writing the website they're building out the structure the main thing about the technology and where we at today ten years ago graphic designers couldn't have just jumped over to WordPress and started to feel it out and help you put together a website but now they can and the benefits of this is the fact that brand identity can flow so much smoother across platforms so you can have your logo your letterhead your business card your whole ad campaign flow so much better.

Because the graphic designer is holding the reins of each one now if you're a graphic designer and you're thinking well I'm just learning the basics keep at that keep learning the basics of graphic design learn about form learn about rhythm learn about how to arrange tight use space and line and all that to create great graphic design compositions then take your knowledge of graphic design.

Is graphic design a good major? Besides learning the Adobe Creative Cloud Photoshop InDesign illustrator learning and graphic design fundamentals are there any exterior or ulterior benefits to that degree you know is it worth the 30 to 40 thousand dollars that you're gonna invest in order to become a graphic designer a bachelor's in graphic design .

So really the answer is yes because it helps you see problems from multiple angles and I say this in the fact of if you're willing to invest yourself if you're willing to go all-in in your graphic design education now if you're just going to college to like party and have a good time and maybe you know.

Learn a few design skills along the way don't waste your money don't go you're gonna learn Photoshop and design an illustrator and that'll be all fun but you're not gonna get the depth and the brevity of the graphic design degree if you don't focus in on learning those key fundamentals those key principles.

And then realizing you can apply those to other experiences and other job situations in your life so if you're a masterful problem solver you're gonna be able to go into business situations and help them develop strategies and plans you're gonna be able to go into marketing into advertising you're gonna have this strong business sense because you understand solving problems now.

If you want to really dive in and go deeper with that business sense I recommend going in for a minor in marketing and advertising in business management that way you complement those graphic design problem-solving skills with some strong business understanding because there's a lot of things in business especially in today's world of entrepreneurship that you need to know that way you don't make mistakes with your vision.

What I mean by that is so you really awesome problem-solving idea but it doesn't match some of the fundamentals of business and some of the important concepts then you're gonna mess up so if you compliment your graphic design degree with a minor in marketing advertising business management etc.

You're gonna maximize the ability for that degree to give you great opportunities yes there are ulterior benefits to a graphic design degree in college especially if you're somebody who needs structure and means timelines needs goals to get the degree that you're looking to aim for now if you're somebody who's very self-motivated a lot of the skills can be learned online a lot of them can be learned through online courses through YouTube.

And things along those lines if you're really looking to get a deep immersion a graphic design degree is fantastic I have my bachelor's and my master's degree in graphic design and they have been extremely beneficial to me through the years in my graphic design career so that's just a little bit of perspective on the benefits of a graphic design degree just outside of the core you know learning Photoshop Illustrator and InDesign.

Is graphic design hard? let's see what comes out my brain um there's something that's been on my mind lately and I don't really know if this has like a message a big message to it but I'm just gonna ramble and tell you what it is right so it has to do with graphic design specifically.

but I guess you can extend it to other things so the other day I was having a class at my university at design class and then my teacher was just like he was going on and rambling about the state of design in the country at the moment he was saying was sort of like originality is not a thing anymore and all of us upcoming designers have been inspired by things.

That I've been done and those designers that have inspired those have also been inspired by other designers and it's like a chain so originality is kind of a a myth it doesn't really exist and then he went on to talk about how we're gonna get off of university next year or at the end of this year and then start working for someone we're not going to get paid well enough and we're gonna be expected to hand things in that were meant to be handed in like last week that sort of thing.

I guess like that might make sense from his perspective and that might also be true in a way is also is kind of like a pessimistic view of things and I guess not the kind of thing that you want your students to interiorize but the thing is I feel like a lot of people in the field of design I guess have the mentality and have that mentality that I don't know that they can't like make good money or that they can't like live well from their craft from the things they make.

And that's not okay that's totally just up to us I get this question a lot on my my different articles or whatever and it's from people think I don't draw very well can I be a graphic designer or I have no experience with Photoshop or illustrator or any of that software can I be a graphic designer you have these questions they're totally valid it's totally okay but don't let them don't let the little things stop you from reaching your goal like I had drawing lessons when I was in high school.

And  I kind of enjoyed them I had a good time drawing because it was that moment when I could like put my earphones in listen to some music and just draw actually when I got to university and I had to take a drawing class which a side note not every graphic design University is going to require like drawing classes or they're not going to be part of the program.

But my particular University here in Portugal did so I had to take drawing lessons and I hated them I really really really hated them luckily it was only one year even though I liked drawing before I went to university.

I went out of that you really really disliking drawing there is always going to be a part little parts of this thing that you like that you're not gonna like so much just think that soon it will be over pat yourself on the back for having done it and it will all be behind your back and you won't have to worry about it anymore.

It'll be just tiny fractions of the span of time that you'll be doing design or whatever it is but my point with this is just to say that just like drawing there will be many other things to graphic design that you might not like so much or that you might not be familiar with you might not be a master of Illustrator or Photoshop or whatever program you'll need to use before you start your course.

I wasn't I never used Illustrator or Photoshop or InDesign or any of that before I started my degree you just have to like pull yourself up is that a saying and get started somewhere don't let other people's level of knowledge on a certain thing stop you from wanting to get there too or wanting to go higher than that every people ever.

oh how do i english because every person has their starting point and yours might not have happened yet but it will and it's just a matter of time if you're a graphic designer in particular or I guess if you're someone that likes design and would like to give it a go and go to university and study it.

Then I'm going to suggest something to you because it's something that has helped change my mentality of what design is so a guy called Aaron James traveling he's a designer he's from the US it's a guy that I really admired and said I just want to like his bump and be like you're the man he doesn't turn graphic design into this thing that is like you must use these rules you must pair the colors like this you must use all these theories and like there needs to be all this science behind every move that you make but instead.

he's just like sit in front of your laptops and start playing with things and coffee fix and drag this let things happen and just embrace it and whatever it comes out of this will be cool and you can work from there I just truly preferred his methodology.

And I like that kind of opportunity of not passing by specific principles that I think about when you go to college or when you start learning about something that you feel are kind of imposed on what you do so yeah check out Aaron rattling um yeah let's just run this off before I chose my degree there wasn't much that.

I actually knew about it I knew where I was I knew kind of what I wanted but I didn't know how to get there I didn't know how to work with all these programs but you just have to take the first step that you think will get you there and then eventually you will get there and sometimes what other people say on the way who put you down will be not the biggest boost. 

And can kind of get you a little bit what's the opposite of motivated I'm motivated oh gosh not everybody's experience is going to be the same so you have your own thing treasure that and do your thing see you and be cool and rock on yeah that's my message for today.

Graphic designer cv. So, as a Graphic Designer, when you apply for a job, you will showcase a portfolio of your work. This will display all your creative skills and work you have done to date. As I have said in previous episodes of the series, a good portfolio is arguably the most important thing you will need to get a job. 

It is what you are judged on. However, there is something else potential clients or employers will judge you on and that is your experience. Now Graphic Design can be particularly competitive. When many applicants are applying for a position, experience can often be the deciding factor. 

So as well as showcasing your work, you will need to showcase your experience. This comes in the form of a CV that will go along with your portfolio. Now I often get asked a lot of questions about the Graphic Design CV. Questions like, what makes for a good design CV? What kind of CV is ideal, print or computerized? What should I include? How many pages should it be?

So let's look at some of those questions. So the first question is, what makes for a good design CV? There are lots of factors that make for a good CV, all of which you should try and implement in yours. So first is originality.

Employers will see hundreds of CVs. This is where you have a chance to stand out and create something a little different. Here you can consider orientation, color, typography, and composition. If you have a personal brand, you can apply it here. Well structured, now you have to imagine that the employer is browsing through lots of CVs at a fast pace, and chances are the employer will be looking for something specific. 

In my experience, presenting a clear hierarchy is key, so throughout your CV, aim to create a clear hierarchy of information. They might only glance at your cover page for a few seconds, so one of the first things you want them to see are your key skills. So, on your front cover, you should consider including a list of your key design strengths to software expertise. 

This will catch the attention straightaway. If you meet the criteria, chances are they will put your CV into the short list. Now typically you will have to include details about your experience and if you have a lot this can mean creating a CV with a few more pages than you may want. 

If you choose to add more info, than leave that towards the back. If someone does not want to read it, that's fine as long as the key facts are presented clearly first. Keep the layout simple and clear. Now employers will be put off if the layout of a CV is too complex, too busy, or hard to navigate. This will demonstrate poor design skills, reflect badly on you, and discourage the reader. 

If you have a personal brand, keep it subtle. The purpose of your CV is to be read and digested quickly. The reader should be able to digest key facts in less than a minute. Don't distract from that. So it will help to keep your layout nice and simple. Show you have thought about it and taken care to compose it. 

This will make a good impression. Good typography, now remember an employer will be scrutinizing everything they see from you, your portfolio, and your CV. Your CV is a representation of you. Take maximum care and make sure your typography is flawless. If your CV is nicely balanced, easy to read, it will make a good impression. Errors and sloppiness will reflect badly on you.

What kind of CV is ideal, print or computerized? Well today, it is very common to send a CV over email or upload it to a portfolio design website as a PDF document. A lot of employers will be looking at these on screen and then more than likely will print them out. Now my advice here is to create a digital DPF that can be both viewed on screen and printed. This means only having to create one document, so you could consider creating a landscape CV as this will look nice on screen. 

In your PDF, you could also include hyperlinks to your portfolio website or social media pages. Remember, your digital CV will also have to work in print, so try and create a clear design with contrast between the type and any background color you may use. If you are smart here, you can kill two birds with one stone. 

What exactly should I include? So in your CV, you should include in order, your key skills, this is one of the first things you want someone to see. This could be a list of your design strengths to software experience. A personal profile, so this should be a short paragraph about yourself between 50 and 100 words. 

This is where you get to say a few words about you as a person and as a designer. Here you can talk about your particular passions, interests, and what you specialize in. This should be one of the first things they see, so aim to have this towards the front. Education and qualifications, this should be a breakdown of your relevant education. 

You don't have to go that far back here. A list of your relevant education regarding art to design will be best here. Work experience, so depending on how much experience you have, this will be a list of the places you have worked.
